Your priorities as a designer should actually be focused on what your client wants as they want it. Your design should be professional and not in shambles . Colour blending should have it's place too to make your design more sensible.

A designer should focus on the entirety of the project. Usually the design requirement is not clear but if you have the complete idea of the website that you are building then you can probably relate that with the colors that you are going to use. Sometimes it is good to infuse your own idea on the graphics even if it has deviated from the requirements. But don't forget to have it approved when you show the demo of your design. Yeah that’s true. The purpose of every design is to pass some level of information to the public. Every time and color should be well depicted. However, it’s best to follow client’s directives regarding the design and it’s good to involve new ideas in a design.

Following a client directive is a good start but can be stressful, most client don't know what they want, it's your duty as a designer to let them know what's good and what's bad, your own idea of it should come to play, they might refuse and insist their ideas, you just have to take their ideas and simplify it to suit what they want.
