Does this depend on the industry or are there more universal sources that analyze market trends? If I wanted to know Apple's current market share as opposed to Microsoft, for example, what is a good, reliable source of such data?

I would think that this would be important for entrepreneurs as well as investors, as it pays to get at least some basic market statistics and trends for the industry that you're trying to enter.
